Numbers 13:3 Meaning and Commentary

Numbers 13:3

And Moses, by the commandment of the Lord
By his power, permission, and leave, as Jarchi, that there might be no delay through his means:

sent them from the wilderness of Paran;
from Rithmah or Kadeshbarnea, which seem to be one and the same place in that wilderness: this, as before observed, was on the twenty ninth day of Sivan: (See Gill on Numbers 13:1);

all those [were] heads of the children of Israel;
were not mean and vulgar men, but persons of rule, who bore some office of magistracy ant government among the people in their respective tribes.

Numbers 13:3 In-Context

1 God spoke to Moses:
2 "Send men to scout out the country of Canaan that I am giving to the People of Israel. Send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a tried-and-true leader in the tribe."
3 So Moses sent them off from the Wilderness of Paran at the command of God. All of them were leaders in Israel, one from each tribe.
4 These were their names: from Reuben: Shammua son of Zaccur
5 from Simeon: Shaphat son of Hori
