11Amaziah was twenty-fiveyearsold when he becameking, and he reignedtwenty-nineyears in Jerusalem. And his mother'sname was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2
He didright in the sight of the LORD, 2yet not with a wholeheart.
3
Now 3it came about as soon as the kingdom was afirmly in his grasp, that he killed his servants who had slain his father the king.
4
However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, which the LORDcommanded, saying, "4Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, norsons be put to death for fathers, but each shall be put to death for his own sin."
5
Moreover, AmaziahassembledJudah and appointed them according to their fathers'households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundredsthroughoutJudah and Benjamin ; and he btook a census of those 5from twentyyearsold and upward and found them to be 6300,000choice men, able to go to war and handlespear and shield.
6
He hired also 100,000valiantwarriors out of Israel for one hundredtalents of silver.
7
But 7a man of Godcame to him saying, "O king, do not let the army of Israelgo with you, for the LORD is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim.
8
"But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle ; yet God will cbring you downbefore the enemy, 8for Godhaspower to help and to dbringdown."
9Amaziahsaid to the man of God, "But what shall we do for the hundredtalentswhich I have given to the troops of Israel ?" And the man of Godanswered, "9The LORDhasmuchmore to give you thanthis."
10
Then Amaziahedismissed them, the troopswhichcame to him from Ephraim, to gohome ; so their angerburned against Judah and they returnedfhome in fierceanger.
11
Now Amaziahstrengthened himself and led his peopleforth, and went to 10the Valley of Salt and struckdown10,000 of the sons of Seir.
12
The sons of Judah also captured10,000alive and brought them to the top of the cliff and threw them down from the top of the cliff, so that they were alldashed to pieces.
13
But the gtroopswhomAmaziahsentback from going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struckdown3,000 of them and plunderedmuchspoil.
14
Now afterAmaziahcame from slaughtering the Edomites, 11he brought the gods of the sons of Seir, set them up as his gods, boweddownbefore them and burnedincense to them.
15
Then the anger of the LORDburned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people12who have not delivered their own people from your hand ?"
16
As he was talking with him, hthe king said to him, "Have we appointed you a royalcounselor ? Stop ! Why should you be struckdown ?" Then the prophetstopped and said, "I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have donethis and have not listened to my counsel."
1713Then Amaziahking of Judahtookcounsel and sent to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us face each other."
18Joash the king of Israelsent to Amaziahking of Judah, saying, "14The thornbushwhich was in Lebanonsent to the cedarwhich was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son in marriage.' But there passed by a wildbeast that was in Lebanon and trampled the thornbush.
19
"You said, 'Behold, you have idefeatedEdom.' And 15your heart has jbecomeproud in boasting. Nowstay at home ; for why should you provoketrouble so that you, even you, would fall and Judah with you?"
20
But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, that He might deliver them into the hand of Joash because they had sought the gods of Edom.
21
So Joashking of Israelwent up, and he and Amaziahking of Judahfaced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah.
22Judah was defeatedkby Israel, and they fledeach to his tent.
23
Then Joashking of IsraelcapturedAmaziahking of Judah, the son of Joash the son of 16Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and toredown the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the CornerGate, 400lcubits.
24
He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with 17Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king'shouse, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
2518And Amaziah, the son of Joashking of Judah, livedfifteenyearsafter the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.
26
Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from first to last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel ?
27
From the time that Amaziahturnedaway from following the LORD they conspiredagainst him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish ; but they sentafter him to Lachish and killed him there.
28
Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
