When they had brought them, they stood them before1the Council. The highpriestquestioned them,

saying, "We gave you 2strictorders not to continue teaching in thisname, and yet, you have filledJerusalem with your teaching and 3intend to bringthisman'sblood upon us."

But Peter and the apostlesanswered, "4We mustobeyGodratherthanmen.

"5The God of our fathers6raised up Jesus, whom you had 7put to death by hanging Him on a cross.

"8He is the one whom Godexalted to His righthand as a 9Prince and a 10Savior, to grant11repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

"And we are 12witnesses of thesethings; and 13so is the HolySpirit, whomGod has given to those who obey Him."
Gamaliel's Counsel
33 But when they heard this, they were 14cut to the quick and intended to kill them.

But a Phariseenamed15Gamaliel, a 16teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in 17the Council and gaveorders to put the menoutside for a shorttime.

And he said to them, "Men of Israel, takecarewhat you propose to do with thesemen.

"For sometimeagoTheudasrose up, 18claiming to be somebody, and a group of aboutfourhundredmenjoined up with him. But he was killed, and allwhofollowed him were dispersed and came to nothing.

"Afterthisman, Judas of Galileerose up in the days of 19the census and drewaway some peopleafter him; he tooperished, and all those whofollowed him were scattered.
