James 4:6-16 (New American Standard)

6 But 1He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "2GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." 7 3Submit therefore to God. 4Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 5Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. 6Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and 7purify your hearts, you 8double-minded. 9 9Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 10Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. 11 11Do not speak against one another, 12brethren. He who speaks against a brother or 13judges his brother, speaks against 14the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not 15a doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one 16Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is 17able to save and to destroy; but 18who are you who judge your neighbor? 13 19Come now, you who say, "20Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 aYet you do not know bwhat your life will be like tomorrow. 21You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 cInstead, you ought to say, "22If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your darrogance; 23all such boasting is evil.
