When Jesus had spokenthese words, 1He wentforth with His disciplesover2the aravine of the Kidron, where there was 3a garden, in which He enteredbwith His disciples.
2NowJudasalso, who was cbetraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had 4oftenmetthere with His disciples.
35Judasthen, having received6the Roman dcohort and 7officers from the chiefpriests and the Pharisees, camethere with lanterns and 8torches and weapons.
4SoJesus, 9knowingall the things that were coming upon Him, wentforth and said to them, "10Whom do you seek ?"5
They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He said to them, "I am He." And Judasalso, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
6Sowhen He said to them, "I am He," they drewback and fell to the ground.
7Therefore He againasked them, "11Whom do you seek ?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."
8Jesusanswered, "I told you that I am He; soif you seek Me, letthesego their way,"9
to fulfill the wordwhich He spoke, "12Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."10SimonPeterthen, 13having a sword, drew it and struck the highpriest'sslave, and cutoff his rightear ; and the slave'sname was Malchus.
11SoJesussaid to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath ; 14the cupwhich the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?"
1215So16the Roman ecohort and the fcommander and the 17officers of the Jews, arrestedJesus and bound Him,
13
and led Him to 18Annasfirst ; for he was father-in-law of 19Caiaphas, who was highpriest that year.
14NowCaiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that 20it was expedient for oneman to die on behalf of the people.
1521SimonPeter was followingJesus, and so was anotherdisciple. Now that disciple was known to the highpriest, and entered with Jesus into 22the court of the highpriest,
1623but Peter was standing at the dooroutside. So the otherdisciple, who was known to the highpriest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and broughtPeter in.
1724Then the slave-girl who kept the doorsaid to Peter, "25You are not also one of thisman'sdisciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."
18Now the slaves and the 26officers were standing there, having made27a charcoalfire, for it was cold and they were 28warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
1929The highpriestthenquestionedJesusabout His disciples, and about His teaching.
20Jesusanswered him, "I 30have spokenopenly to the world ; I always31taught in gsynagogues and 32in the temple, whereall the Jewscometogether ; and I spokenothing in secret.21"Why do you question Me? Questionthose who have heardwhat I spoke to them; they knowwhat I said."22
When He had saidthis, one of the 33officersstandingnearby34struckJesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the highpriest ?"
2335Jesusanswered him, "If I have spokenwrongly, testify of the wrong ; but ifrightly, why do you strike Me?"2436SoAnnassent Him bound to 37Caiaphas the highpriest.
2538Now39SimonPeter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "40You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."
26One of the slaves of the highpriest, being a relative of the one 41whoseearPetercutoff, said, "Did I not see you in 42the garden with Him?"
27Peterthendenied it again, and immediately43a roostercrowed.
2844Then they ledJesus from 45Caiaphas into 46the hPraetorium, and it was early ; and they themselves did not enter into 47the iPraetoriumso that 48they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
2949ThereforePilatewent out to them and said, "Whataccusation do you bring against thisMan ?"
30
They answered and said to him, "IfthisMan were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you."
31SoPilatesaid to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jewssaid to him, "We are not permitted to putanyone to death,"
32
to fulfill50the word of Jesuswhich He spoke, signifying by whatkind of death He was about to die.
33ThereforePilate51enteredagain into the Praetorium, and summonedJesus and said to Him, "52Are You the King of the Jews ?"
34Jesusanswered, "Are you sayingthisjon your owninitiative, or did otherstell you about Me?"35Pilateanswered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chiefpriestsdelivered You to me; what have You done ?"
36Jesusanswered, "53My kingdomkis not of thisworld. If My kingdom were of thisworld, then My servants would be fightingso that I would not be handed over to the Jews ; but as it is, My kingdom is not lof thisrealm."37ThereforePilatesaid to Him, "So You are a king ?" Jesusanswered, "54You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, 55to testify to the truth. 56Everyone who is of the truthhears My voice."38Pilatesaid to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had saidthis, he 57went out again to the Jews and said to them, "58 I findnoguilt in Him.
39
"59But you have a custom that I releasesomeonemfor you at the Passover ; do you wishthen that I releasenfor you the King of the Jews ?"
40So they cried out again, saying, "60Not thisMan, but Barabbas." NowBarabbas was a robber.
