So the chiefpriests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '1The King of the Jews '; but that He said, 'I am2King of the Jews.' "

Pilateanswered, "3What I have written I have written."

Then4the soldiers, when they had crucifiedJesus, took His outergarments and made5fourparts, a part to everysoldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in onepiece.

So they said to oneanother, "6Let us not tear it, but castlots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; 7this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY 8DIVIDED MY OUTERGARMENTSAMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CASTLOTS."

Therefore the soldiersdidthesethings. 9But standing by the cross of Jesus were 10His mother, and His mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and 11MaryMagdalene.

When Jesusthensaw His mother, and 12the disciplewhom He lovedstandingnearby, He said to His mother, "13Woman, behold, your son!"

Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the discipletook her into 14his own household.

Afterthis, Jesus, 15knowing that allthings had already been accomplished, 16to fulfill the Scripture, said, "17I amthirsty."

A jarfull of sourwine was standing there; so18they put a spongefull of the sourwine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

ThereforewhenJesus had received the sourwine, He said, "19It is finished!" And He bowed His head and 20gave up His spirit.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31Then the Jews, because it was 21the day of preparation, so that 22the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a 23highday ), askedPilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be takenaway.
