23
Then1the soldiers, when they had crucifiedJesus, took His outergarments and made2fourparts, a part to everysoldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in onepiece.
24
So they said to oneanother, "3Let us not tear it, but castlots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; 4this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY 5DIVIDED MY OUTERGARMENTSAMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CASTLOTS."
25
Therefore the soldiersdidthesethings. 6But standing by the cross of Jesus were 7His mother, and His mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and 8MaryMagdalene.
26
When Jesusthensaw His mother, and 9the disciplewhom He lovedstandingnearby, He said to His mother, "10Woman, behold, your son!"
27
Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the discipletook her into 11his own household.
28
Afterthis, Jesus, 12knowing that allthings had already been accomplished, 13to fulfill the Scripture, said, "14I amthirsty."
29
A jarfull of sourwine was standing there; so15they put a spongefull of the sourwine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
30
ThereforewhenJesus had received the sourwine, He said, "16It is finished!" And He bowed His head and 17gave up His spirit.
Care of the Body of Jesus
31Then the Jews, because it was 18the day of preparation, so that 19the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a 20highday ), askedPilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be takenaway.
32
So the soldierscame, and broke the legs of the firstman and of the other who was 21crucified with Him;
33
but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was alreadydead, they did not break His legs.
