There came a woman of Samaria to drawwater. Jesussaid to her, "Give Me a drink."8
For His 1disciples had goneaway into 2the city to buyfood.
9Therefore the 3Samaritanwomansaid to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritanwoman ?" (For 4Jewshavenodealings with Samaritans.)
10Jesusanswered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you 5livingwater."11
She said to Him, "aSir, You havenothing to draw with and the well is deep ; wherethen do You get that 6living water?
"You are not greater than our fatherJacob, are You, who7gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle ?"
13Jesusanswered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of thiswater will thirstagain ;14but whoeverdrinks of the water that I will give him 8shall neverthirst ; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of waterspringing up to 9eternallife."15
The womansaid to Him, "bSir, 10give me thiswater, so I will not be thirstynorcome all the way here to draw."
He said to her, "Go, call your husband and comehere."17
The womananswered and said, "I havenohusband." Jesussaid to her, "You have correctlysaid, 'I havenohusband ';18for you havehadfivehusbands, and the one whom you nowhave is not your husband ; this you have saidtruly."19
The womansaid to Him, "cSir, I perceive that You are 11a prophet.
"12Our fathersworshiped in 13thismountain, and you people say that 14in Jerusalem is the placewhere men ought to worship."
21Jesussaid to her, "Woman, believe Me, 15an hour is comingwhen16neither in thismountainnor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.22"17You worshipwhat you do not know ; we worshipwhat we know, for 18salvation is from the Jews.23"But 19an hour is coming, and now is, when the trueworshipers will worship the Father20in spirit and truth ; for suchpeople the Fatherseeks to be His worshipers.24"God is dspirit, and those who worship Him mustworship21in spirit and truth."25
The womansaid to Him, "I know that 22Messiah is coming (23He who is calledChrist ); when that Onecomes, He will declareallthings to us."
26Jesussaid to her, "24I who speak to you am He."27
At thispoint His 25disciplescame, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yetnoonesaid, "What do You seek ?" or, "Why do You speak with her?"
28So the womanleft her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,
29"Come, see a man26whotold me all the things that I have done ; 27this is not ethe Christ, is it?"
They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "28Rabbi, eat."
But He said to them, "I havefood to eat that you do not knowabout."33So the 29disciples were saying to oneanother, "Noonebrought Him anything to eat, did he?"
34Jesussaid to them, "My food is to 30do the will of Him who sent Me and to 31accomplish His work.35"Do you not say, 'There are yetfourmonths, and then comes the harvest '? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white32for harvest.36"Already he who reaps is receiving33wages and is gathering34fruit for 35lifeeternal ; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoicetogether.37"For in this case the saying is true, '36Onesows and anotherreaps.'38"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored ; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
