And the book of the prophetIsaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the placewhere it was written,

"1THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIMRELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES,AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,TO SETFREE* THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,

And He 3closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and 4satdown; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

And He began to say to them, "TodaythisScripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

And all were speakingwell of Him, and wondering at the graciouswords which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "5Is this not Joseph'sson?"

And He said to them, "Nodoubt you will quotethisproverb to Me, 'Physician, healyourself! Whatever we heard was done6at Capernaum, dohere in 7your hometown as well.' "

And He said, "Truly I say to you, 8noprophet is welcome in his hometown.

"But I say to you in truth, there were manywidows in Israel9in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for threeyears and sixmonths, when a greatfaminecameoverall the land;
26
and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but 10only* to Zarephath, in the land of 11Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
27
"And there were manylepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but 12only*Naaman the Syrian."
