The Pharisees and the scribesasked Him, "Why* do Your disciples not walkaccording to the 1tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with 2impurehands?"

And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiahprophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:'3THISPEOPLEHONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,BUT THEIR HEART IS FARAWAY* FROM ME.

'4BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'

"Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the 5tradition of men."

He was alsosaying to them, "You are experts at settingaside the commandment of God in order to keep your 6tradition.

"For Mosessaid, '7HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER '; and, '8HE WHO SPEAKSEVIL OF FATHERORMOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH ';

but you say, 'If a mansays to his fatheror his mother, whatever* I have that would help you is 9Corban (that is to say, given to God),'

you nolongerpermit him to doanything for his fatheror his mother;

thus invalidating the word of God by your 10traditionwhich you have handeddown; and you domanythingssuch as that."

14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, "Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:

there is nothingoutside the man which candefile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.
