Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in 15Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 16appoint 17elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, 18if any man is above reproach, the 19husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 20dissipation or 21rebellion. 7 For the c22overseer must be above reproach as 23God's steward, not 24self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 25addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 26not fond of sordid gain, 8 but 27hospitable, 28loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 29holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 30sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. 10 31For there are many 32rebellious men, 33empty talkers and deceivers, especially 34those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting 35whole families, teaching 36things they should not teach 37for the sake of sordid gain. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "38Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons."
