Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in 1Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 2appoint 3elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, 4if any man is above reproach, the 5husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of 6dissipation or 7rebellion. 7 For the a8overseer must be above reproach as 9God's steward, not 10self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 11addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 12not fond of sordid gain, 8 but 13hospitable, 14loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 15holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in 16sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. 10 17For there are many 18rebellious men, 19empty talkers and deceivers, especially 20those of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting 21whole families, teaching 22things they should not teach 23for the sake of sordid gain. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "24Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." 13 This testimony is true. For this reason 25reprove them 26severely so that they may be 27sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish 28myths and 29commandments of men who 30turn away from the truth. 15 31To the pure, all things are pure; but 32to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 33mind and their conscience are defiled. 16 34They profess to know God, but by their deeds they 35deny Him, being 36detestable and 37disobedient and 38worthless 39for any good deed.
