For thisreason I left you in 1Crete, that you would set in order what remains and 2appoint3elders in everycity as I directed you,
namely, 4ifanyman is abovereproach, the 5husband of onewife, havingchildrenwhobelieve, not accused of 6dissipationor7rebellion.
For the a8overseermust be abovereproach as 9God'ssteward, not 10self-willed, not quick-tempered, not 11addicted to wine, not pugnacious, 12not fond of sordidgain,
but 13hospitable, 14lovingwhat is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
915holdingfast the faithfulword which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be ableboth to exhort in 16sounddoctrine and to refutethose who contradict.
1017For there are many18rebelliousmen, 19emptytalkers and deceivers, especially20those of the circumcision,
11whomust be silencedbecause they are upsetting21wholefamilies, teaching22things they should not teach 23for the sake of sordidgain.
12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "24Cretans are alwaysliars, evilbeasts, lazygluttons."
13Thistestimony is true. For thisreason25reprove them 26severelyso that they may be 27sound in the faith,
not payingattention to Jewish28myths and 29commandments of men who 30turnaway from the truth.
1531To the pure, allthings are pure ; but 32to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their 33mind and their conscience are defiled.
1634They profess to knowGod, but by their deeds they 35deny Him, being36detestable and 37disobedient and 38worthless39for anygooddeed.
