1 Tola, juez de Israel
Después de la muerte de Abimelec, la siguiente persona que rescató a Israel fue Tola, hijo de Puá, hijo de Dodo. Era de la tribu de Isacar pero vivía en la ciudad de Samir, en la zona montañosa de Efraín.

2 Fue juez de Israel durante veintitrés años. Cuando murió, lo enterraron en Samir.

3 Jair, juez de Israel
Después de la muerte de Tola, Jair, de Galaad, fue juez de Israel durante veintidós años.

4 Sus treinta hijos cabalgaban sobre treinta burros y eran dueños de treinta ciudades en la tierra de Galaad, que aún se llaman las Ciudades de Jair.

5 Cuando murió Jair, lo enterraron en Camón.

6 Los amonitas oprimen a Israel
Una vez más, los israelitas hicieron lo malo a los ojos del Señor
. Sirvieron a las imágenes de Baal y de Astoret, y a los dioses de Aram, de Sidón, de Moab, de Amón y de Filistea. Abandonaron al Señor
y dejaron de servirle por completo.

7 Entonces el Señor
ardió de enojo contra los israelitas y los entregó en manos de los filisteos y los amonitas,

8 quienes comenzaron a oprimirlos ese mismo año. Durante dieciocho años oprimieron a los israelitas que vivían al oriente del río Jordán, en la tierra de los amorreos (es decir, Galaad).

9 Los amonitas también cruzaron al lado occidental del Jordán y atacaron a Judá, a Benjamín y a Efraín.
Los israelitas estaban muy angustiados.

10 Finalmente clamaron al Señor
por ayuda y dijeron:
—Hemos pecado contra ti, porque te hemos abandonado como nuestro Dios para servir a las imágenes de Baal.

11 El Señor
respondió:
—¿Acaso no los rescaté yo de los egipcios, los amorreos, los amonitas, los filisteos,

12 los sidonios, los amalecitas y los maonitas? Cuando ellos los oprimían, ustedes clamaban a mí por ayuda, y yo los rescataba.

13 Sin embargo, ustedes me abandonaron y sirvieron a otros dioses. Así que ya no los rescataré más.

14 ¡Vayan a clamar a los dioses que han escogido! ¡Que los rescaten ellos de este momento de angustia!

15 Pero los israelitas rogaron al Señor
diciendo:
—Hemos pecado. Castíganos como bien te parezca, pero rescátanos hoy de nuestros enemigos.

16 Entonces los israelitas dejaron los dioses ajenos para servir al Señor
, y él se entristeció a causa del sufrimiento que experimentaban.

17 En esa ocasión, los ejércitos de Amón se habían juntado para la guerra y acampaban en Galaad, y el pueblo de Israel se congregó y acampó en Mizpa.

18 Los líderes de Galaad se dijeron unos a otros: «El primero que ataque a los amonitas será proclamado gobernante de todo el pueblo de Galaad».

Jueces 10 Commentary

Chapter 10

Tola and Jair judge Israel. (1-5) The Philistines and Ammonites oppress Israel. (6-9) Israel's repentance. (10-18)

Verses 1-5 Quiet and peaceable reigns, though the best to live in, yield least variety of matter to be spoken of. Such were the days of Tola and Jair. They were humble, active, and useful men, rulers appointed of God.

Verses 6-9 Now the threatening was fulfilled, that the Israelites should have no power to stand before their enemies, Le. 26:17, Le. 26:37 . By their evil ways and their evil doings they procured this to themselves.

Verses 10-18 God is able to multiply men's punishments according to the numbers of their sins and idols. But there is hope when sinners cry to the Lord for help, and lament their ungodliness as well as their more open transgressions. It is necessary, in true repentance, that there be a full conviction that those things cannot help us which we have set in competition with God. They acknowledged what they deserved, yet prayed to God not to deal with them according to their deserts. We must submit to God's justice, with a hope in his mercy. True repentance is not only for sin, but from sin. As the disobedience and misery of a child are a grief to a tender father, so the provocations of God's people are a grief to him. From him mercy never can be sought in vain. Let then the trembling sinner, and the almost despairing backslider, cease from debating about God's secret purposes, or from expecting to find hope from former experiences. Let them cast themselves on the mercy of God our Saviour, humble themselves under his hand, seek deliverance from the powers of darkness, separate themselves from sin, and from occasions of it, use the means of grace diligently, and wait the Lord's time, and so they shall certainly rejoice in his mercy.

This chapter gives an account of two judges of Israel, in whose days they enjoyed peace, Jud 10:1-5, after which they sinning against God, came into trouble, and were oppressed by their enemies eighteen years, and were also invaded by an army of the Ammonites, Jud 10:6-9, when they cried unto the Lord for deliverance, confessing their sin; but he had first refused to grant them any, though upon their importunity and reformation he had compassion on them, Jud 10:10-16 and the chapter is concluded with the preparation made by both armies for a battle, Jud 10:17,18.
