El ejemplo de los recabitas

1 La palabra del SEÑOR vino a mí, Jeremías, en los días de Joacim hijo de Josías, rey de Judá:

2 «Ve a la familia de los recabitas, e invítalos para que vengan a una de las salas de la casa del SEÑOR, y ofréceles vino».

3 Entonces fui a buscar a Jazanías, hijo de mi tocayo Jeremías y nieto de Jabasinías, y a sus hermanos y a todos sus hijos, y a toda la familia de los recabitas.

4 Los llevé a la casa del SEÑOR, a la sala de los hijos de Janán hijo de Igdalías, hombre de Dios. Esta sala se encontraba junto a la de los jefes, que a su vez estaba encima de la de Maseías hijo de Salún, guardián del umbral.

5 Les serví a los recabitas jarras y copas llenas de vino, y les dije: «¡Beban!»

6 Ellos me respondieron: «Nosotros no bebemos vino, porque Jonadab hijo de Recab, nuestro antepasado, nos ordenó lo siguiente: “Nunca beban vino, ni ustedes ni sus descendientes.

7 Tampoco edifiquen casas, ni siembren semillas, ni planten viñedos, ni posean ninguna de estas cosas. Habiten siempre en tiendas de campaña, para que vivan mucho tiempo en esta tierra donde son extranjeros”.

8 Nosotros obedecemos todo lo que nos ordenó Jonadab hijo de Recab, nuestro antepasado. Nunca bebemos vino, ni tampoco lo hacen nuestras mujeres ni nuestros hijos.

9 No edificamos casas para habitarlas; no poseemos viñedos ni campos sembrados.

10 Vivimos en tiendas de campaña y obedecemos todo lo que nos ordenó Jonadab, nuestro antepasado.

11 Pero cuando Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, invadió esta tierra, dijimos: “Vámonos a Jerusalén, para escapar del ejército babilonio y del ejército sirio”. Por eso ahora vivimos en Jerusalén».

12 Entonces la palabra del SEÑOR vino a Jeremías:

13 «Así dice el SEÑORTodopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: “Ve y dile a toda la gente de Judá y Jerusalén: ¿No pueden aprender esta lección, y obedecer mis palabras? —afirma el SEÑOR—.

14 Los descendientes de Jonadab hijo de Recab han cumplido con la orden de no beber vino, y hasta el día de hoy no lo beben porque obedecen lo que su antepasado les ordenó. En cambio ustedes, aunque yo les he hablado en repetidas ocasiones, no me han hecho caso.

15 Además, no he dejado de enviarles a mis siervos, los profetas, para decirles: ‘Conviértanse ya de su mal camino, enmienden sus acciones y no sigan a otros dioses para servirlos; entonces habitarán en la tierra que yo les he dado a ustedes y a sus antepasados’. Pero ustedes no me han prestado atención; no me han hecho caso.

16 Los descendientes de Jonadab hijo de Recab cumplieron la orden dada por su antepasado; en cambio, este pueblo no me obedece”.

17 »Por eso, así dice el SEÑOR, Dios Todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: “Voy a enviar contra Judá y contra todos los habitantes de Jerusalén todas las calamidades que ya les he anunciado, porque les hablé y no me obedecieron; los llamé y no me respondieron”».

18 Jeremías también les dijo a los recabitas: «Así dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: “Por cuanto ustedes han obedecido las órdenes de Jonadab, su antepasado, y han cumplido con todos sus mandamientos y han hecho todo lo que él les ordenó,

19 así dice el SEÑOR Todopoderoso, el Dios de Israel: ‘Nunca le faltará a Jonadab hijo de Recab un descendiente que esté a mi servicio todos los días’”».

Chapter 35

The obedience of the Rechabites. (1-11) The Jews' disobedience to the Lord. (12-19)

Verses 1-11 Jonadab was famous for wisdom and piety. He lived nearly ( 2 Kings. 10:15 ) to drink wine. He also appointed them to dwell in tents, or movable dwelling: this would teach them not to think of settling any where in this world. To keep low, would be the way to continue long in the land where they were strangers. Humility and contentment are always the best policy, and men's surest protection. Also, that they might not run into unlawful pleasures, they were to deny themselves even lawful delights. The consideration that we are strangers and pilgrims should oblige us to abstain from all fleshly lusts. Let them have little to lose, and then losing times would be the less dreadful: let them sit loose to what they had, and then they might with less pain be stript of it. Those are in the best frame to meet sufferings who live a life of self-denial, and who despise the vanities of the world. Jonadab's posterity observed these rules strictly, only using proper means for their safety in a time of general suffering.

Verses 12-19 The trial of the Rechabites' constancy was for a sign; it made the disobedience of the Jews to God the more marked. The Rechabites were obedient to one who was but a man like themselves, and Jonadab never did for his seed what God has done for his people. Mercy is promised to the Rechabites. We are not told respecting the performance of this promise; but doubtless it was performed, and travellers say the Rechabites may be found a separate people to this day. Let us follow the counsels of our pious forefathers, and we shall find good in so doing.

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 35

In this chapter the disobedience of the people of the Jews unto God is aggravated by the obedience of the Rechabites to their father; and the one are threatened with the judgments of God upon them, and the other have a promise of the divine blessing. The time of this prophecy is observed; Jer 35:1; an order to bring the Rechabites into one of the chambers of the temple, which was done accordingly, Jer 35:2-4; wine is set before them to drink; which they refuse; alleging the command of their father to the contrary, Jer 35:5-7; which they had carefully and constantly obeyed in every part of it, excepting that which respects their dwelling in tents; for which they give a reason, Jer 35:8-11; by this instance of filial obedience to parents, the disobedience of the Jews towards their Father, which is in heaven, is aggravated; who, though he gave them laws and commandments, and sent his prophets to put them in mind of them, and exhort them to obedience, yet hearkened not to them, Jer 35:12-15; wherefore the Lord threatens to bring all the evil on them he had pronounced, Jer 35:16,17; and promises the sons of Rechab that there should be always some of them that should minister unto him, Jer 35:18,19.
