Jesus Answers the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes
131Then they sentsome of the Pharisees and 2Herodians to Him in order to 3trap Him in a statement.

They came and said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to noone; for You are not partial* to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?

"Shall we payor shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at."

They brought one. And He said to them, "Whoselikeness and inscription is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."

And Jesussaid to them, "4Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him.

5Some Sadducees (whosay that there is noresurrection ) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying,

"Teacher, Moseswrote for us that 6IF A MAN'SBROTHERDIES and leavesbehind a wife AND LEAVESNOCHILD, HIS BROTHER SHOULD MARRY THE WIFE AND RAISE UP CHILDREN TO HIS BROTHER.

"There were sevenbrothers; and the firsttook a wife, and diedleavingnochildren.

"The secondonemarried her, and diedleavingbehindnochildren; and the thirdlikewise;
22
and so allsevenleftnochildren. Last of all the womandiedalso.

"In the resurrection, when they riseagain, whichone'swife will she be? For allsevenhad married her."

Jesussaid to them, "Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scripturesor the power of God?

"For when they rise from the dead, they neithermarrynor are given in marriage, but are likeangels in heaven.

"But regarding the fact that the deadriseagain, have you not read in the book of Moses, 7in the passage about the burning bush, howGodspoke to him, saying, '8I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob '?
