Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins1 endless?2
You demanded security3 from your brothers for no reason;4 you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked.5
You gave no water6 to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,7
though you were a powerful man, owning land8-- an honored man,9 living on it.10
And you sent widows11 away empty-handed12 and broke the strength of the fatherless.13
That is why snares14 are all around you,15 why sudden peril terrifies you,16
why it is so dark17 you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.18
"Is not God in the heights of heaven?19 And see how lofty are the highest stars!
Yet you say, 'What does God know?20 Does he judge through such darkness?21
Thick clouds22 veil him, so he does not see us23 as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'24
