You gave us up to be devoured like sheep1 and have scattered us among the nations.212
You sold your people for a pittance,3 gaining nothing from their sale.
You have made us a reproach4 to our neighbors,5 the scorn6 and derision7 of those around us.
You have made us a byword8 among the nations; the peoples shake their heads9 at us.
My disgrace10 is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame1116
at the taunts12 of those who reproach and revile13 me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.1417
All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten15 you or been false to your covenant.
Our hearts had not turned16 back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
But you crushed17 us and made us a haunt for jackals18 and covered us over with deep darkness.1920
If we had forgotten20 the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,2121
would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?22
