But now you have rejected1 and humbled us;2 you no longer go out with our armies.310
You made us retreat4 before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered5 us.
You gave us up to be devoured like sheep6 and have scattered us among the nations.712
You sold your people for a pittance,8 gaining nothing from their sale.
You have made us a reproach9 to our neighbors,10 the scorn11 and derision12 of those around us.
You have made us a byword13 among the nations; the peoples shake their heads14 at us.
My disgrace15 is before me all day long, and my face is covered with shame1616
at the taunts17 of those who reproach and revile18 me, because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.1917
All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten20 you or been false to your covenant.
Our hearts had not turned21 back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
But you crushed22 us and made us a haunt for jackals23 and covered us over with deep darkness.24
