1 Have mercy1 on me, O God, according to your unfailing love;2 according to your great compassion3 blot out4 my transgressions.5 2 Wash away6 all my iniquity and cleanse7 me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.8 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned9 and done what is evil in your sight,10 so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge.11 5 Surely I was sinful12 at birth,13 sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 6 Surely you desire truth in the inner partsa; you teachb me wisdom14 in the inmost place.15 7 Cleanse16 me with hyssop,17 and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.18 8 Let me hear joy and gladness;19 let the bones20 you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins21 and blot out22 all my iniquity. 10 Create in me a pure heart,23 O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.24 11 Do not cast me25 from your presence26 or take your Holy Spirit27 from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation28 and grant me a willing spirit,29 to sustain me.30 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,31 and sinners32 will turn back to you.33 14 Save me34 from bloodguilt,35 O God, the God who saves me,36 and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.37 15 O Lord, open my lips,38 and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 You do not delight in sacrifice,39 or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 The sacrifices40 of God arec a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart,41 O God, you will not despise. 18 In your good pleasure make Zion42 prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem.43 19 Then there will be righteous sacrifices,44 whole burnt offerings45 to delight you; then bulls46 will be offered on your altar.Scripture quoted by permission.
