The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows,1 turned back on the day of battle;210
they did not keep God's covenant3 and refused to live by his law.411
They forgot what he had done,5 the wonders he had shown them.

He did miracles6 in the sight of their fathers in the land of Egypt,7 in the region of Zoan.813
He divided the sea9 and led them through; he made the water stand firm like a wall.1014
He guided them with the cloud by day and with light from the fire all night.1115
He split the rocks12 in the desert and gave them water as abundant as the seas;

he brought streams out of a rocky crag and made water flow down like rivers.

But they continued to sin13 against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.

They willfully put God to the test14 by demanding the food they craved.1519
They spoke against God,16 saying, "Can God spread a table in the desert?
