Acts 25:1 Meaning and Commentary

Acts 25:1

Now when Festus was come into the province
Of Judea, which was a Roman province, over which he was made governor by Nero, the Roman emperor, in the room of Felix; he now being landed in some part of the province, namely, at Caesarea, and so might be said to have entered upon the government of it, as the phrase will bear to be rendered;

after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem;
he very likely came by sea from Italy to Judea, and landed at Caesarea; for though Joppa was the nearest port to Jerusalem, yet Caesarea was the safest, and most commodious port, being made so by Herod; (See Gill on Acts 18:22), and besides, it seems to have been very much the residence of the kings and governors of Judea, ( Acts 12:19 ) ( Acts 23:23 Acts 23:33 ) here Festus stayed three days after his landing, to rest himself after the fatigue of the voyage, and then went up to Jerusalem, the metropolis of the province of Judea.

Acts 25:1 In-Context

1 Three days after arriving in the province, Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem,
2 where the chief priests and the Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul.
3 They requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.
4 Festus answered, “Paul is being held at Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon.
5 Let some of your leaders come with me, and if the man has done anything wrong, they can press charges against him there.”
