As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,12
in which you used to live2 when you followed the ways of this world3 and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air,4 the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.53
All of us also lived among them at one time,6 gratifying the cravings of our sinful naturea7 and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
But because of his great love for us,8 God, who is rich in mercy,
made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions9--it is by grace you have been saved.106
And God raised us up with Christ11 and seated us with him12 in the heavenly realms13 in Christ Jesus,
in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace,14 expressed in his kindness15 to us in Christ Jesus.
For it is by grace16 you have been saved,17 through faith18--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
not by works,19 so that no one can boast.2010
For we are God's handiwork,21 created22 in Christ Jesus to do good works,23 which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Therefore, remember that formerly24 you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (which is done in the body by human hands)25--
remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners26 to the covenants of the promise,27 without hope28 and without God in the world.
But now in Christ Jesus you who once29 were far away have been brought near30 by the blood of Christ.3114
For he himself is our peace,32 who has made the two one33 and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
by setting aside in his flesh34 the law with its commands and regulations.35 His purpose was to create in himself one36 new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,
and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross,37 by which he put to death their hostility.
He came and preached peace38 to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.3918
For through him we both have access40 to the Father41 by one Spirit.4219
Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers,43 but fellow citizens44 with God's people and also members of his household,4520
built46 on the foundation47 of the apostles and prophets,48 with Christ Jesus himself49 as the chief cornerstone.5021
In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple51 in the Lord.
And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.52
