Bible Verses about Burning Sage - Scripture on Incense Rituals

The burning of sage or incense is performed by both the Western Catholic and Eastern Christian churches as a ceremony of the prayer of the faithful rising to heaven. This relationship is seen in Psalm 141:2 - "Let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight: the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice." Burning sage and incense is usually practiced as part of a purification ritual before prayer and worshiping the Lord.

In the Revelation of John, incense symbolizes the prayers of the saints in heaven - the "golden bowl full of incense" are "the prayers of the saints" which rise up to the Kingdom of God.
