This is what they will get in return for their pride,1 for insulting2 and mocking the people of the LORD Almighty.311
The LORD will be awesome4 to them when he destroys all the gods5 of the land.6 The nations on every shore will worship him,7 every one in its own land.
He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria,10 leaving Nineveh11 utterly desolate and dry as the desert.1214
Flocks and herds13 will lie down there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl14 and the screech owl1516 will roost on her columns. Their calls will echo through the windows, rubble will be in the doorways, the beams of cedar will be exposed.
This is the carefree17 city that lived in safety.18 She said to herself, "I am, and there is none besides me."19 What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts!20 All who pass by her scoff21 and shake their fists.22
