Then he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fightagainstMoab?" And he said, "I will go up; I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."

So the king of Israelwent with the king of Judah and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of sevendays'journey, and there was nowater for the army or for the cattle that followed them.

But Jehoshaphatsaid, "Is there not a prophet of the LORDhere, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?" And one of the king of Israel'sservantsanswered and said, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who used to pourwater on the hands of Elijah."

Now Elishasaid to the king of Israel, "What do I have to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." And the king of Israelsaid to him, "No, for the LORD has calledthesethreekings together to give them into the hand of Moab."

Elishasaid, "As the LORD of hostslives, beforewhom I stand, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you norsee you.

"For thussays the LORD, 'You shall not seewindnor shall you seerain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, both you and your cattle and your beasts.

'Then you shall strikeeveryfortifiedcity and everychoicecity, and felleverygoodtree and stopallsprings of water, and mareverygoodpiece of land with stones.' "

It happened in the morning about the time of offering the sacrifice, that behold, watercame by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

Now all the Moabitesheard that the kings had come up to fight against them. And all who were able to put on armor and older were summoned and stood on the border.

But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelitesarose and struck the Moabites, so that they fledbefore* them; and they went forward into the land, slaughtering the Moabites.

Thus they destroyed the cities; and eachonethrew a stone on everypiece of goodland and filled it. So they stoppedall the springs of water and felledall the goodtrees, until in Kir-hareseth only they left its stones; however, the slingerswentabout it and struck it.

When the king of Moabsaw that the battle was toofierce for him, he took with him 700*men who drewswords, to breakthrough to the king of Edom; but they could not.

Then he took his oldestsonwho was to reign in his place, and offered him as a burntoffering on the wall. And there camegreatwrathagainstIsrael, and they departed from him and returned to their own land.
