Pilatealsowrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, "1JESUS THE NAZARENE, 2THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Thereforemany of the Jewsreadthisinscription, for the placewhereJesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written3in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.

So the chiefpriests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, '4The King of the Jews '; but that He said, 'I am5King of the Jews.' "

Pilateanswered, "6What I have written I have written."

Then7the soldiers, when they had crucifiedJesus, took His outergarments and made8fourparts, a part to everysoldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in onepiece.

So they said to oneanother, "9Let us not tear it, but castlots for it, to decide whose it shall be"; 10this was to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY 11DIVIDED MY OUTERGARMENTSAMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CASTLOTS."

Therefore the soldiersdidthesethings. 12But standing by the cross of Jesus were 13His mother, and His mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and 14MaryMagdalene.

When Jesusthensaw His mother, and 15the disciplewhom He lovedstandingnearby, He said to His mother, "16Woman, behold, your son!"

Then He said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour the discipletook her into 17his own household.

Afterthis, Jesus, 18knowing that allthings had already been accomplished, 19to fulfill the Scripture, said, "20I amthirsty."

A jarfull of sourwine was standing there; so21they put a spongefull of the sourwine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
