13
So the Phariseessaid to Him, "1You are testifyingaboutYourself; Your testimony is not true."
14
Jesusanswered and said to them, "2Evenif I testifyaboutMyself, My testimony is true, for I know3where I came from and where I am going; but 4you do not knowwhere I come from orwhere I am going.
15
"5You judgeaccording to the flesh; 6I am not judginganyone.
16
"But even7if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17
"Even in 8your law it has been written that the testimony of 9twomen is true.
18
"I am He who testifiesaboutMyself, and 10the Father who sent Me testifiesabout Me."
19
So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesusanswered, "You knowneither Me nor My Father; 11if you knew Me, you would know My Fatheralso."
20
Thesewords He spoke in 12the treasury, as 13He taught in the temple; and nooneseized Him, because14His hour had not yetcome.
21
Then He saidagain to them, "I goaway, and 15you will seek Me, and 16will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot*come."
22
So17the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not killHimself, will He, since He says, '18Where I am going, you cannot*come '?"
23
And He was saying to them, "19You are from below, I am from above; 20you are of thisworld, 21I am not of thisworld.
24
"Therefore I said to you that you 22will die in your sins; for unless* you believe that 23I am He, 24you will die in your sins."
25
So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesussaid to them, "What* have I been saying to you from the beginning?
26
"I havemanythings to speak and to judgeconcerning you, but 25He who sent Me is true; and 26the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."
27
They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.
28
SoJesussaid, "When you 27lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that 28I am He, and 29I donothing on My owninitiative, but I speakthesethings as the Fathertaught Me.
29
"And He who sent Me is with Me; 30He has not left Me alone, for 31I alwaysdo the things that are pleasing to Him."
30
As He spokethesethings, 32many came to believe in Him.
The Truth Will Make You Free
31SoJesus was saying to thoseJews who had believed Him, "33If you continue in My word, then you are truly34disciples of Mine;
32
and 35you will know the truth, and 36the truth will make you free."
33
They answered Him, "37We are Abraham'sdescendants and have never*yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will becomefree '?"
34
Jesusanswered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, 38everyone who commitssin is the slave of sin.
35
"39The slave does not remain in the houseforever; 40the son does remainforever.
36
"Soif the Son41makes you free, you will be freeindeed.
37
"I know that you are 42Abraham'sdescendants; yet43you seek to kill Me, because My wordhasnoplace in you.
38
"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you alsodo the things which you heard from 44your father."
39
They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is 45our father." Jesussaid to them, "46If you are Abraham'schildren, do the deeds of Abraham.
40
"But as it is, 47you are seeking to kill Me, a manwho has 48told you the truth, which I heard from God; thisAbraham did not do.
41
"You are doing the deeds of 49your father." They said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; 50we haveoneFather: God."
42
Jesussaid to them, "IfGod were your Father, 51you would love Me, 52for I proceededforth and havecome from God, for I have 53not evencome on My owninitiative, but 54He sent Me.
43
"Why* do you not understand55what I am saying? It is because you cannot*56hear My word.
44
"57You are of 58your father the devil, and 59you want to do the desires of your father. 60He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truthbecause61there is notruth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he 62speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45
"But because63I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
46
"Whichone of you convicts Me of sin? If64I speaktruth, why* do you not believe Me?
47
"65He who is of Godhears the words of God; for thisreason you do not hear them, because you are not of God."
48
66The Jewsanswered and said to Him, "Do we not sayrightly that You are a 67Samaritan and 68have a demon?"
49
Jesusanswered, "I do not 69have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
50
"But 70I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
51
"Truly, truly, I say to you, ifanyone71keeps My word he will never*72seedeath."
52
73The Jewssaid to Him, "Now we know that You 74have a demon. Abrahamdied, and the prophets also; and You say, 'Ifanyone75keeps My word, he will never*76taste of death.'
53
"Surely You 77are not greater than our fatherAbraham, whodied? The prophetsdiedtoo; whom do You makeYourself out to be?"
54
Jesusanswered, "78If I glorifyMyself, My glory is nothing; 79it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God ';
55
and 80you have not come to know Him, 81but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be 82a liarlike you, 83but I do know Him and 84keep His word.
56
"85Your fatherAbraham86rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
57
87So the Jewssaid to Him, "You are not yetfiftyyears old, and have You seenAbraham?"
58
Jesussaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, beforeAbraham was born, 88I am."
