But you are a chosen people,1 a royal priesthood,2 a holy nation,3 a people belonging to God,4 that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.510
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;6 once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Dear friends,7 I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world,8 to abstain from sinful desires,9 which war against your soul.1012
Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds11 and glorify God12 on the day he visits us.
Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority13 instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority,
or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong14 and to commend those who do right.1515
For it is God's will16 that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.1716
Live as free men,18 but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil;19 live as servants of God.2017
Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers,21 fear God, honor the king.2218
Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect,23 not only to those who are good and considerate,24 but also to those who are harsh.
For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.2520
But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.2621
To this27 you were called,28 because Christ suffered for you,29 leaving you an example,30 that you should follow in his steps.
"He committed no sin,31 and no deceit was found in his mouth."a3223
When they hurled their insults at him,33 he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.34 Instead, he entrusted himself35 to him who judges justly.3624
He himself bore our sins37 in his body on the tree,38 so that we might die to sins39 and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.4025
For you were like sheep going astray,41 but now you have returned to the Shepherd42 and Overseer of your souls.43
