"Woe1 to the Assyrian,2 the rod3 of my anger, in whose hand is the club4 of my wrath!56
I send him against a godless6 nation, I dispatch7 him against a people who anger me,8 to seize loot and snatch plunder,9 and to trample10 them down like mud in the streets.
But this is not what he intends,11 this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.
'Are not my commanders12 all kings?' he says.
'Has not Calno13 fared like Carchemish?14 Is not Hamath15 like Arpad,16 and Samaria17 like Damascus?1810
As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,19 kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria--
shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?20' "
When the Lord has finished all his work21 against Mount Zion22 and Jerusalem, he will say, "I will punish the king of Assyria23 for the willful pride24 of his heart and the haughty look25 in his eyes.
For he says: " 'By the strength of my hand26 I have done this,27 and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures;28 like a mighty one I subdueda their kings.2914
As one reaches into a nest,30 so my hand reached for the wealth31 of the nations; as men gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries;32 not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.33' "
Does the ax raise itself above him who swings it, or the saw boast against him who uses it?34 As if a rod were to wield him who lifts it up, or a club35 brandish him who is not wood!
Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease36 upon his sturdy warriors;37 under his pomp38 a fire39 will be kindled like a blazing flame.
The Light of Israel will become a fire,40 their Holy One41 a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns42 and his briers.4318
The splendor of his forests44 and fertile fields it will completely destroy,45 as when a sick man wastes away.
And the remaining trees of his forests46 will be so few47 that a child could write them down.
In that day48 the remnant of Israel, the survivors49 of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely50 on him who struck them down51 but will truly rely52 on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.5321
A remnant54 will return,b55 a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.5622
Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand57 by the sea, only a remnant will return.58 Destruction has been decreed,59 overwhelming and righteous.
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed60 upon the whole land.6124
Therefore, this is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: "O my people who live in Zion,62 do not be afraid63 of the Assyrians, who beat64 you with a rod65 and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
Very soon66 my anger against you will end and my wrath67 will be directed to their destruction.68"
The LORD Almighty will lash69 them with a whip, as when he struck down Midian70 at the rock of Oreb; and he will raise his staff71 over the waters,72 as he did in Egypt.
In that day73 their burden74 will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke75 from your neck;76 the yoke77 will be broken because you have grown so fat.c28
They enter Aiath; they pass through Migron;78 they store supplies79 at Micmash.8029
They go over the pass, and say, "We will camp overnight at Geba.81" Ramah82 trembles; Gibeah83 of Saul flees.8430
Cry out, O Daughter of Gallim!85 Listen, O Laishah! Poor Anathoth!8631
Madmenah is in flight; the people of Gebim take cover.
This day they will halt at Nob;87 they will shake their fist88 at the mount of the Daughter of Zion,89 at the hill of Jerusalem.
