A Rebellious Nation

2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth!8 For the LORD has spoken:9 "I reared children10 and brought them up, but they have rebelled11 against me. 3 The ox knows12 his master, the donkey his owner's manger,13 but Israel does not know,14 my people do not understand.15" 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt,16 a brood of evildoers,17 children given to corruption!18 They have forsaken19 the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One20 of Israel and turned their backs21 on him. 5 Why should you be beaten22 anymore? Why do you persist23 in rebellion?24 Your whole head is injured, your whole heart25 afflicted.26 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head27 there is no soundness28-- only wounds and welts29 and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged30 or soothed with oil.31 7 Your country is desolate,32 your cities burned with fire;33 your fields are being stripped by foreigners34 right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.35 8 The Daughter of Zion36 is left37 like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut38 in a field of melons, like a city under siege. 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors,39 we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.40
