Distress and Help

1 Woe1 to you, O destroyer, you who have not been destroyed! Woe to you, O traitor, you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying, you will be destroyed;2 when you stop betraying, you will be betrayed.3 2 O LORD, be gracious4 to us; we long for you. Be our strength5 every morning, our salvation6 in time of distress.7 3 At the thunder of your voice,8 the peoples flee;9 when you rise up,10 the nations scatter. 4 Your plunder,11 O nations, is harvested12 as by young locusts;13 like a swarm of locusts men pounce on it. 5 The LORD is exalted,14 for he dwells on high;15 he will fill Zion with justice16 and righteousness.17 6 He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation18 and wisdom and knowledge; the fear19 of the LORD is the key to this treasure.a20 7 Look, their brave men21 cry aloud in the streets; the envoys22 of peace weep bitterly. 8 The highways are deserted, no travelers23 are on the roads.24 The treaty is broken,25 its witnessesb are despised, no one is respected. 9 The land mournsc26 and wastes away, Lebanon27 is ashamed and withers;28 Sharon29 is like the Arabah, and Bashan30 and Carmel31 drop their leaves. 10 "Now will I arise,32" says the LORD. "Now will I be exalted;33 now will I be lifted up. 11 You conceive34 chaff, you give birth35 to straw; your breath is a fire36 that consumes you. 12 The peoples will be burned as if to lime;37 like cut thornbushes38 they will be set ablaze.39" 13 You who are far away,40 hear41 what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge my power! 14 The sinners42 in Zion are terrified; trembling43 grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?44 Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"
