I am just like you before God;1 I too have been taken from clay.2

No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy upon you.3

"But you have said in my hearing-- I heard the very words--
9
'I am pure4 and without sin;5 I am clean and free from guilt.6

Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.7

He fastens my feet in shackles;8 he keeps close watch on all my paths.'9

"But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man.10

Why do you complain to him11 that he answers none of man's wordsa ?12

For God does speak13--now one way, now another14-- though man may not perceive it.15

In a dream,16 in a vision17 of the night,18 when deep sleep19 falls on men as they slumber in their beds,

he may speak20 in their ears and terrify them21 with warnings,22

to turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride,23
18
to preserve his soul from the pit,b24 his life from perishing by the sword.c25
