For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.1

Yet man is born to trouble2 as surely as sparks fly upward.

"But if it were I, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.3
9
He performs wonders4 that cannot be fathomed,5 miracles that cannot be counted.6
10
He bestows rain on the earth;7 he sends water upon the countryside.8

The lowly he sets on high,9 and those who mourn10 are lifted11 to safety.
12
He thwarts the plans12 of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.13
13
He catches the wise14 in their craftiness,15 and the schemes of the wily are swept away.16

Darkness17 comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night.18

He saves the needy19 from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.20
16
So the poor21 have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.22
