Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins,1 all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

Your foes roared2 in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards3 as signs.

They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees.4

They smashed all the carved5 paneling with their axes and hatchets.

They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled6 the dwelling place7 of your Name.8

They said in their hearts, "We will crush9 them completely!" They burned10 every place where God was worshiped in the land.
