I saw the Holy City,1 the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,2 prepared as a bride3 beautifully dressed for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them.4 They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.54
He will wipe every tear from their eyes.6 There will be no more death7 or mourning or crying or pain,8 for the old order of things has passed away."95
He who was seated on the throne10 said, "I am making everything new!"11 Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."126
He said to me: "It is done.13 I am the Alpha and the Omega,14 the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost15 from the spring of the water of life.167
He who overcomes17 will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.188
But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars19--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.20 This is the second death."219
One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues22 came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride,23 the wife of the Lamb."
And he carried me away24 in the Spirit25 to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.2611
It shone with the glory of God,27 and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper,28 clear as crystal.2912
It had a great, high wall with twelve gates,30 and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.3113
There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west.
The wall of the city had twelve foundations,32 and on them were the names of the twelve apostles33 of the Lamb.
The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod34 of gold to measure the city, its gates35 and its walls.
The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadiaa in length, and as wide and high as it is long.
He measured its wall and it was 144 cubitsb thick,c by man's36 measurement, which the angel was using.
The wall was made of jasper,37 and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass.3819
The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone.39 The first foundation was jasper,40 the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,
the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian,41 the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.d21
The twelve gates42 were twelve pearls,43 each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.4422
I did not see a temple45 in the city, because the Lord God Almighty46 and the Lamb47 are its temple.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God48 gives it light,49 and the Lamb50 is its lamp.
The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.5125
On no day will its gates52 ever be shut,53 for there will be no night there.5426
The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.5527
Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful,56 but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.57
