Qualifications of Elders

5 For this reason I left you in ¹Crete, that you would set in order what remains and ²appoint ³elders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, ⁴if any man is above reproach, the ⁵husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of ⁶dissipation or ⁷rebellion. 7 For the ^a⁸overseer must be above reproach as ⁹God's steward, not ¹⁰self-willed, not quick-tempered, not ¹¹addicted to wine, not pugnacious, ¹²not fond of sordid gain, 8 but ¹³hospitable, ¹⁴loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 ¹⁵holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in ¹⁶sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
