John 9:30 Meaning and Commentary

John 9:30

The man answered and said unto them
Very appropriately and pertinently,

why herein is a marvellous thing;
strange and unaccountable,

that ye know not from whence he is;
that you learned doctors, men of sagacity and penetration, should not be able to discern that this man is of God, is a prophet sent by him, and that there should be any doubt from whence he comes, or from whom he has his commission:

and [yet] he hath opened mine eyes;
which was so clearly and plainly the work of the Messiah, and to be done by him when he came, ( Isaiah 35:4 Isaiah 35:5 ) ( 42:7 ) .

John 9:30 In-Context

28 They ridiculed him: "You're that man's disciple, but we're Moses' disciples.
29 We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man-we don't know where He's from!"
30 "This is an amazing thing," the man told them. "You don't know where He is from, yet He opened my eyes!
31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him.
32 Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.
