The cities of Aroer1 will be deserted and left to flocks,2 which will lie down,3 with no one to make them afraid.43
The fortified5 city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory6 of the Israelites,"7 declares the LORD Almighty.
"In that day8 the glory9 of Jacob will fade; the fat of his body will waste10 away.
It will be as when a reaper gathers the standing grain and harvests11 the grain with his arm-- as when a man gleans heads of grain12 in the Valley of Rephaim.136
Yet some gleanings will remain,14 as when an olive tree is beaten,15 leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches, four or five on the fruitful boughs," declares the LORD, the God of Israel.
In that day16 men will look17 to their Maker18 and turn their eyes to the Holy One19 of Israel.
They will not look to the altars,20 the work of their hands,21 and they will have no regard for the Asherah polesa22 and the incense altars their fingers23 have made.
In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth.24 And all will be desolation.
You have forgotten25 God your Savior;26 you have not remembered the Rock,27 your fortress.28 Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines,2911
though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning30 when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest31 will be as nothing32 in the day of disease and incurable33 pain.3412
Oh, the raging35 of many nations-- they rage like the raging sea!36 Oh, the uproar37 of the peoples-- they roar like the roaring of great waters!38
