The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.
The officials of Zoan1 are nothing but fools; the wise counselors2 of Pharaoh give senseless advice.3 How can you say to Pharaoh, "I am one of the wise men,4 a disciple of the ancient kings"?
Where are your wise men5 now? Let them show you and make known what the LORD Almighty has planned6 against Egypt.
The officials of Zoan7 have become fools, the leaders of Memphisa8 are deceived; the cornerstones9 of her peoples have led Egypt astray.
The LORD has poured into them a spirit of dizziness;10 they make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers11 around in his vomit.
There is nothing Egypt can do-- head or tail, palm branch or reed.1216
In that day13 the Egyptians will be like women.14 They will shudder with fear15 at the uplifted hand16 that the LORD Almighty raises against them.
And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified,17 because of what the LORD Almighty is planning18 against them.
In that day19 five cities20 in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance21 to the LORD Almighty. One of them will be called the City of Destruction.b2219
In that day23 there will be an altar24 to the LORD in the heart of Egypt,25 and a monument26 to the LORD at its border.
It will be a sign and witness27 to the LORD Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior28 and defender, and he will rescue29 them.
