"Sit in silence,1 go into darkness,2 Daughter of the Babylonians;3 no more will you be called queen4 of kingdoms.56
I was angry6 with my people and desecrated my inheritance;7 I gave them into your hand,8 and you showed them no mercy.9 Even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke.
You said, 'I will continue forever10-- the eternal queen!'11 But you did not consider these things or reflect12 on what might happen.138
"Now then, listen, you wanton creature, lounging in your security14 and saying to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.15 I will never be a widow16 or suffer the loss of children.'
Both of these will overtake you in a moment,17 on a single day: loss of children18 and widowhood.19 They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries20 and all your potent spells.2110
You have trusted22 in your wickedness and have said, 'No one sees me.'23 Your wisdom24 and knowledge mislead25 you when you say to yourself, 'I am, and there is none besides me.'
Disaster26 will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly27 come upon you.
"Keep on, then, with your magic spells and with your many sorceries,28 which you have labored at since childhood. Perhaps you will succeed, perhaps you will cause terror.
All the counsel you have received has only worn you out!29 Let your astrologers30 come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save31 you from what is coming upon you.
Surely they are like stubble;32 the fire33 will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame.34 Here are no coals to warm anyone; here is no fire to sit by.
That is all they can do for you-- these you have labored with and trafficked35 with since childhood. Each of them goes on in his error; there is not one that can save36 you.
