Isaiah 5:18-28 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
18 Woe1 to those who draw sin along with cords2 of deceit, and wickedness3 as with cart ropes, 19 to those who say, "Let God hurry, let him hasten4 his work so we may see it. Let it approach, let the plan of the Holy One5 of Israel come, so we may know it."6 20 Woe7 to those who call evil good8 and good evil,9 who put darkness for light and light for darkness,10 who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.11 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes12 and clever in their own sight. 22 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine13 and champions at mixing drinks,14 23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe,15 but deny justice16 to the innocent.17 24 Therefore, as tongues of fire18 lick up straw19 and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay20 and their flowers blow away like dust;21 for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word22 of the Holy One23 of Israel. 25 Therefore the LORD's anger24 burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake,25 and the dead bodies26 are like refuse27 in the streets.28 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,29 his hand is still upraised.30 26 He lifts up a banner31 for the distant nations, he whistles32 for those at the ends of the earth.33 Here they come, swiftly and speedily! 27 Not one of them grows tired34 or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt35 is loosened at the waist,36 not a sandal thong is broken.37 28 Their arrows are sharp,38 all their bows39 are strung; their horses' hoofs40 seem like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.41
