At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.15
"Woe2 to me!" I cried. "I am ruined!3 For I am a man of unclean lips,45 and I live among a people of unclean lips,6 and my eyes have seen7 the King,8 the LORD Almighty."96
Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal10 in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.
With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips;11 your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.12"
Then I heard the voice13 of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send?14 And who will go for us?15" And I said, "Here am I.16 Send me!"
He said, "Go17 and tell this people: " 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'1810
Make the heart of this people calloused;19 make their ears dull and close their eyes.a20 Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears,21 understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed."2211
Then I said, "For how long, O Lord?"23 And he answered: "Until the cities lie ruined24 and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted25 and the fields ruined and ravaged,2612
until the LORD has sent everyone far away27 and the land is utterly forsaken.2813
And though a tenth remains29 in the land, it will again be laid waste.30 But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps31 when they are cut down, so the holy32 seed will be the stump in the land."33
