Jeremiah 32:16-44 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
16 "After I had given the deed of purchase to Baruch1 son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD: 17 "Ah, Sovereign LORD,2 you have made the heavens and the earth3 by your great power and outstretched arm.4 Nothing is too hard5 for you. 18 You show love6 to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps7 of their children8 after them. O great and powerful God,9 whose name is the LORD Almighty,10 19 great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.11 Your eyes are open to all the ways of men;12 you reward everyone according to his conduct and as his deeds deserve.13 20 You performed miraculous signs and wonders14 in Egypt15 and have continued them to this day, both in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown16 that is still yours. 21 You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand17 and an outstretched arm18 and with great terror.19 22 You gave them this land you had sworn to give their forefathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.20 23 They came in and took possession21 of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;22 they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster23 upon them. 24 "See how the siege ramps24 are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,25 the city will be handed over to the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said26 has happened,27 as you now see. 25 And though the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, you, O Sovereign LORD, say to me, 'Buy the field28 with silver and have the transaction witnessed.29' " 26 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: 27 "I am the LORD, the God of all mankind.30 Is anything too hard for me?31 28 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar32 king of Babylon, who will capture it.33 29 The Babylonians who are attacking this city will come in and set it on fire; they will burn it down,34 along with the houses35 where the people provoked me to anger by burning incense on the roofs to Baal and by pouring out drink offerings36 to other gods.37 30 "The people of Israel and Judah have done nothing but evil in my sight from their youth;38 indeed, the people of Israel have done nothing but provoke39 me with what their hands have made,40 declares the LORD. 31 From the day it was built until now, this city41 has so aroused my anger and wrath that I must remove42 it from my sight. 32 The people of Israel and Judah have provoked43 me by all the evil44 they have done--they, their kings and officials,45 their priests and prophets, the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem. 33 They turned their backs46 to me and not their faces; though I taught47 them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline.48 34 They set up their abominable idols49 in the house that bears my Name50 and defiled51 it. 35 They built high places for Baal in the Valley of Ben Hinnom52 to sacrifice their sons and daughtersa to Molech,53 though I never commanded, nor did it enter my mind,54 that they should do such a detestable55 thing and so make Judah sin.56 36 "You are saying about this city, 'By the sword, famine and plague57 it will be handed over to the king of Babylon'; but this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 37 I will surely gather58 them from all the lands where I banish them in my furious anger59 and great wrath; I will bring them back to this place and let them live in safety.60 38 They will be my people,61 and I will be their God. 39 I will give them singleness62 of heart and action, so that they will always fear63 me for their own good and the good of their children after them. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant64 with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire65 them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.66 41 I will rejoice67 in doing them good68 and will assuredly plant69 them in this land with all my heart and soul.70 42 "This is what the LORD says: As I have brought all this great calamity71 on this people, so I will give them all the prosperity I have promised72 them. 43 Once more fields will be bought73 in this land of which you say, 'It is a desolate74 waste, without men or animals, for it has been handed over to the Babylonians.' 44 Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds75 will be signed, sealed and witnessed76 in the territory of Benjamin, in the villages around Jerusalem, in the towns of Judah and in the towns of the hill country, of the western foothills and of the Negev,77 because I will restore78 their fortunes,b declares the LORD."
