Night pierces my bones; my gnawing pains never rest.1
In his great power2 [God] becomes like clothing to me; he binds me like the neck of my garment.
He throws me into the mud,3 and I am reduced to dust and ashes.4
"I cry out to you,5 O God, but you do not answer;6 I stand up, but you merely look at me.
You turn on me ruthlessly;7 with the might of your hand8 you attack me.9
You snatch me up and drive me before the wind;10 you toss me about in the storm.11
I know you will bring me down to death,12 to the place appointed for all the living.13
"Surely no one lays a hand on a broken man14 when he cries for help in his distress.15
Have I not wept for those in trouble?16 Has not my soul grieved for the poor?17
Yet when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, then came darkness.18
The churning inside me never stops;19 days of suffering confront me.20
