An Army of Locusts

1 Blow the trumpet1 in Zion;2 sound the alarm on my holy hill.3 Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD4 is coming. It is close at hand5-- 2 a day of darkness6 and gloom,78 a day of clouds9 and blackness.10 Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army11 comes, such as never was of old12 nor ever will be in ages to come. 3 Before them fire13 devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,14 behind them, a desert waste15-- nothing escapes them. 4 They have the appearance of horses;16 they gallop along like cavalry. 5 With a noise like that of chariots17 they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire18 consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle. 6 At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;19 every face turns pale.20 7 They charge like warriors;21 they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line,22 not swerving23 from their course. 8 They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks. 9 They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses;24 like thieves they enter through the windows.25 10 Before them the earth shakes,26 the sky trembles,27 the sun and moon are darkened,28 and the stars no longer shine.29 11 The LORD30 thunders31 at the head of his army;32 his forces are beyond number, and mighty are those who obey his command. The day of the LORD is great;33 it is dreadful. Who can endure it?34

Rend Your Heart

12 "Even now," declares the LORD, "return35 to me with all your heart,36 with fasting and weeping and mourning." 13 Rend your heart37 and not your garments.38 Return39 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,40 slow to anger and abounding in love,41 and he relents from sending calamity.42 14 Who knows? He may turn43 and have pity44 and leave behind a blessing45-- grain offerings and drink offerings46 for the LORD your God. 15 Blow the trumpet47 in Zion,48 declare a holy fast,49 call a sacred assembly.50 16 Gather the people, consecrate51 the assembly; bring together the elders,52 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom53 leave his room and the bride her chamber. 17 Let the priests, who minister54 before the LORD, weep55 between the temple porch and the altar.56 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,57 a byword58 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?59' "

The LORD's Answer

18 Then the LORD will be jealous60 for his land and take pity61 on his people. 19 The LORD will replya to them: "I am sending you grain, new wine62 and oil,63 enough to satisfy you fully;64 never again will I make you an object of scorn65 to the nations. 20 "I will drive the northern army66 far from you, pushing it into a parched and barren land, with its front columns going into the eastern67 seab and those in the rear into the western sea.c And its stench68 will go up; its smell will rise." Surely he has done great things.d 21 Be not afraid,69 O land; be glad and rejoice.70 Surely the LORD has done great things.71 22 Be not afraid, O wild animals, for the open pastures are becoming green.72 The trees are bearing their fruit; the fig tree73 and the vine74 yield their riches.75 23 Be glad, O people of Zion, rejoice76 in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains in righteousness.e77 He sends you abundant showers,78 both autumn79 and spring rains,80 as before. 24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow81 with new wine82 and oil. 25 "I will repay you for the years the locusts83 have eaten84-- the great locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarmf-- my great army85 that I sent among you. 26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,86 and you will praise87 the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders88 for you; never again will my people be shamed.89 27 Then you will know90 that I am in Israel, that I am the LORD91 your God, and that there is no other; never again will my people be shamed.92

The Day of the LORD

28 "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit93 on all people.94 Your sons and daughters will prophesy,95 your old men will dream dreams,96 your young men will see visions. 29 Even on my servants,97 both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.98 30 I will show wonders in the heavens99 and on the earth,100 blood and fire and billows of smoke. 31 The sun will be turned to darkness101 and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.102 32 And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD103 will be saved;104 for on Mount Zion105 and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance,106 as the LORD has said, among the survivors107 whom the LORD calls.108
