Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird.1

They tried to end my life in a pit2 and threw stones at me;

the waters closed over my head,3 and I thought I was about to be cut off.4

I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths5 of the pit.6

You heard my plea:7 "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief."
57
You came near8 when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear."9
58
O Lord, you took up my case;10 you redeemed my life.11
59
You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me.12 Uphold my cause!13
60
You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me.14
61
O LORD, you have heard their insults,15 all their plots against me--
62
what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long.16
