On the twenty-first of the seventhmonth, the word of the LORDcame by 1Haggai the prophetsaying,
2"Speaknow to 2Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, 3governor of Judah, and to 4Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the highpriest, and to the 5remnant of the peoplesaying,
3'Who is 6left among you whosawthisatemple in its 7formerglory ? And how do you see it now ? Does it not bseem to you like nothingcin comparison ?
'But nowd8takecourage, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, 'takecourage also, Joshuason of Jehozadak, the highpriest, and all you people of the landtakecourage,' declares the LORD, 'and work ; for 9I am with you,' declares the LORD of hosts.
'As for the e10promisewhich I fmade you when you came out of Egypt, gMy 11Spirit is abiding in your midst ; 12do not fear !'
"For thussays the LORD of hosts, '13Oncemorehin a 14littlewhile, I am going to 15shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dryland.
'I will shake16all the nations ; and ithey will come with the 17wealth of allnations, and I will 18fillthishouse with glory,' says the LORD of hosts.
'The 19silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,' declares the LORD of hosts.
'The latter20glory of thishouse will be greaterthan the 21former,' says the LORD of hosts, 'and in thisplace I will give22peace,' declares the LORD of hosts."
On the 23twenty-fourth of the ninth month, in the secondyear of Darius, the word of the LORDcame to Haggai the prophet, saying,
11"Thussays the LORD of hosts, '24Asknow the priests for a jruling :
12'If a mancarries25holymeat in the kfold of his garment, and touchesbread with lthis fold, or cookedfood, wine, oil, or any other food, will it becomeholy ?' " And the priestsanswered, "No."
Then Haggaisaid, "26If one who is unclean from a mcorpsetouchesany of these, will the latter becomeunclean ?" And the priestsanswered, "It will becomeunclean."
Then Haggaisaid, " '27So is thispeople. And so is thisnationbefore Me,' declares the LORD, 'and so is everywork of their hands ; and what they offerthere is unclean.
'But now, do n28consider from thisdayoonward : before one 29stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
16pfrom that time when one came to a grain heap of twenty measures, there would be only ten ; and when one came to the winevat to drawfiftyqmeasures, there would be only twenty.
'I smote you and everywork of your hands with 30blastingwind, mildew and hail ; ryet you did not come back to Me,' declares the LORD.
'Do s31consider from thisdaytonward, from the 32twenty-fourthday of the ninth month; from the daywhen the temple of the LORD was 33founded, uconsider :
'Is the seedstill in the barn ? Evenincluding the vine, the figtree, the pomegranate and the olivetree, it has not borne fruit. Yet from thisday on I will 34bless you."'
Then the word of the LORDcame a secondtime to Haggai on the 35twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
21"Speak to 36Zerubbabelgovernor of Judah, saying, 'I am going to 37shake the heavens and the earth.
'I will 38overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the 39power of the kingdoms of the vnations ; and I will 40overthrow the chariots and their riders, and the 41horses and their riders will godown, 42everyone by the sword of another.'
'On that day,' declares the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, My servant,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like a w43signet ring, for 44I have chosen you,' " declares the LORD of hosts.
