1Thereforewhen1the Lordknew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and 2baptizingmoredisciplesthanJohn2
(although3JesusHimself was not baptizing, but His 4disciples were),
He left5Judea and wentaway6again into Galilee.
And He had to passthrough7Samaria.
5So He came to a city of 8SamariacalledSychar, near9the parcel of ground that 10Jacobgave to his sonJoseph;
and Jacob'swell was there. SoJesus, being wearied from His journey, was sittingthus by the well. It was aboutathe sixthhour.
There came a woman of Samaria to drawwater. Jesussaid to her, "Give Me a drink."8
For His 11disciples had goneaway into 12the city to buyfood.
9Therefore the 13Samaritanwomansaid to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritanwoman?" (For 14Jewshavenodealings with Samaritans.)
10Jesusanswered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you 15livingwater."11
She said to Him, "bSir, You havenothing to draw with and the well is deep; wherethen do You get that 16living water?
"You are not greater than our fatherJacob, are You, who17gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?"
13Jesusanswered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of thiswater will thirstagain;14but whoeverdrinks of the water that I will give him 18shall neverthirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of waterspringing up to 19eternallife."15
The womansaid to Him, "cSir, 20give me thiswater, so I will not be thirstynorcome all the way here to draw."
He said to her, "Go, call your husband and comehere."17
The womananswered and said, "I havenohusband." Jesussaid to her, "You have correctlysaid, 'I havenohusband ';18for you havehadfivehusbands, and the one whom you nowhave is not your husband; this you have saidtruly."19
The womansaid to Him, "dSir, I perceive that You are 21a prophet.
"22Our fathersworshiped in 23thismountain, and you people say that 24in Jerusalem is the placewhere men ought to worship."
21Jesussaid to her, "Woman, believe Me, 25an hour is comingwhen26neither in thismountainnor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.22"27You worshipwhat you do not know; we worshipwhat we know, for 28salvation is from the Jews.23"But 29an hour is coming, and now is, when the trueworshipers will worship the Father30in spirit and truth; for suchpeople the Fatherseeks to be His worshipers.24"God is espirit, and those who worship Him mustworship31in spirit and truth."25
The womansaid to Him, "I know that 32Messiah is coming (33He who is calledChrist ); when that Onecomes, He will declareallthings to us."
26Jesussaid to her, "34I who speak to you am He."27
At thispoint His 35disciplescame, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yetnoonesaid, "What do You seek?" or, "Why do You speak with her?"
28So the womanleft her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,
29"Come, see a man36whotold me all the things that I have done; 37this is not fthe Christ, is it?"
They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
31Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "38Rabbi, eat."
But He said to them, "I havefood to eat that you do not knowabout."33So the 39disciples were saying to oneanother, "Noonebrought Him anything to eat, did he?"
34Jesussaid to them, "My food is to 40do the will of Him who sent Me and to 41accomplish His work.35"Do you not say, 'There are yetfourmonths, and then comes the harvest '? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white42for harvest.36"Already he who reaps is receiving43wages and is gathering44fruit for 45lifeeternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoicetogether.37"For in this case the saying is true, '46Onesows and anotherreaps.'38"I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
From 47that citymany of the Samaritansbelieved in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "48He told me all the things that I have done."
40Sowhen the Samaritanscame to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayedtheretwodays.
41Manymorebelievedbecause of His word;
and they were saying to the woman, "It is nolongerbecause of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that thisOne is indeed49the Savior of the world."
