The word of the LORDcame to 1Jonah the son of Amittaisaying,
2"Arise, go to 2Nineveh the greatcity and 3cryagainst it, for their 4wickedness has come up before Me."
But Jonahrose up to flee to 5Tarshish6from the presence of the LORD. So he wentdown to 7Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and wentdown into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
The 8LORDhurled a greatwind on the sea and there was a greatstorm on the sea so that the ship was about to abreak up.
Then the sailorsbecameafraid and everymancried to 9his god, and they 10threw the bcargowhich was in the ship into the sea to lighten it cfor them. But Jonah had gonebelow into the hold of the ship, laindown and fallensoundasleep.
So the captainapproached him and said, "How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, 11call on your god. Perhaps your 12god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish."
7Eachmansaid to his mate, "Come, let us 13castlots so we may dlearn on whoseaccountthiscalamity has struck us." So they castlots and the 14lotfell on Jonah.
Then they said to him, "15Tell us, now! On whose account has thiscalamity struck us? What is your 16occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? From whatpeople are you?"
He said to them, "I am a 17Hebrew, and I 18fear the LORD19God of heavenwho20made the sea and the dryland."
Then the menbecameextremelyfrightened and they said to him, "eHow could you dothis?" For the menknew that he was 21fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
So they said to him, "What should we do to you that the sea may becomecalmffor us?"-for the sea was becomingincreasinglystormy.
He said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will becomecalmgfor you, for I know that 22on account of me thisgreatstorm has come upon you."
However, the menhrowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormieragainst them.
Then they called on the 23LORD and said, "We earnestlypray, OLORD, do not let us perish on account of thisman'slife and do not putinnocentblood on us; for 24You, O LORD, have done as You have pleased."
So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea25stopped its raging.
Then the menfeared the LORDgreatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made26vows.
17iAnd the LORDappointed a greatfish to swallowJonah, and Jonah was in the 27stomach of the fishthreedays and threenights.
