29Thosepassing by were ahurlingabuse at Him, 1wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to 2destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays,
30saveYourself, and comedown from the cross!"
In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes, were mocking Him amongthemselves and saying, "3He savedothers; bHe cannotsaveHimself.
"Let this Christ, 4the King of Israel, nowcomedown from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" 5Those who were crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him.
336When the c7sixthhourcame, darknessdfellover the wholelanduntil the e8ninthhour.
At the 9ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, "10ELOI, ELOI, LAMASABACHTHANI?"which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"35
When some of the bystandersheard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."
36Someoneran and filled a sponge with sourwine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "fLet us seewhetherElijah will come to take Him down."
3711And Jesusuttered a loudcry, and breathed His last.
3812And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
3913When the centurion, who was standinggright in front of Him, sawhthe way He breathed His last, he said, "Trulythisman was ithe Son of God!"
